Elderly Woman Allegedly Assaulted by Daughter-in-Law Over Dispute in Visakhapatnam
An elderly woman was allegedly assaulted and dragged across her farmland by her daughter-in-law following a dispute over agricultural income in Aganampudi on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
According to Duvvada police, the victim, 78-year-old Peddireddla Achchiyyamma, has been supporting herself by cultivating vegetables on her 10-cent plot of land after the death of her husband. She reportedly earns her livelihood by selling the produce grown on the property.
Police said Achchiyyamma has one son, Nageswara Rao, and two daughters. The dispute is alleged to have arisen because her daughter-in-law, Peddireddla Chinnammalu, believed that the money earned from the sale of vegetables was being given to Achchiyyamma's daughters. Investigators said this belief led to tensions within the family.
According to the complaint, Chinnammalu allegedly went to the farmland with the intention of damaging the standing vegetable crop. After receiving information about the incident, Achchiyyamma went to the field accompanied by her grandson, Sai, who is the son of one of her daughters.
At the farm, Achchiyyamma questioned her daughter-in-law over the alleged attempt to destroy the crop. Police said the confrontation escalated, during which Chinnammalu allegedly abused the elderly woman, pushed her to the ground and physically assaulted her.
Investigators further alleged that Chinnammalu dragged Achchiyyamma across the field while claiming ownership of the land. The assault reportedly left the 78-year-old with serious injuries.
Following the complaint, Duvvada police registered a case and began an investigation. Authorities have not disclosed any further details regarding arrests or additional legal action at this stage.
