Telangana Government Probes Airbus H-160 Helicopter Rental Proposal
The Airbus H-160 helicopter rental proposal is under consideration by the Telangana government, with officials examining the feasibility of leasing the advanced aircraft for official use. The latest update indicates that a committee is expected to study multiple aspects of the proposal before a final decision is taken.
The move has drawn attention because the state already operates an Agusta-169 helicopter, which is currently used extensively by government officials. The proposed Airbus H-160 is regarded as one of the most advanced medium twin-engine helicopters available and could significantly increase the government's aviation expenditure.
Airbus H-160 Helicopter Rental Under Review
According to preliminary discussions within the government, officials are considering taking the Airbus H-160 on rent from a Bengaluru-based company. The proposal is still at an early stage, and a committee is likely to examine operational requirements, costs, and usage patterns before submitting its recommendations.
Questions have also emerged over whether the aircraft would be designated primarily for the Chief Minister or whether ministers and senior government officials would also use it. No official statement has yet clarified the intended operational framework.
Key Features of the Airbus H-160
The Airbus H-160 helicopter is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and modern aviation systems. It is available in multiple seating configurations, including 6, 8 and 12-seat variants, and is powered by twin engines.
The helicopter can reportedly reach speeds of up to 255 kmph and remain airborne for approximately 4.5 hours continuously. It is also equipped with autopilot functions and advanced navigation systems designed to improve operational efficiency.
Another notable feature is its noise-reduction design, with special arrangements intended to minimise engine noise inside the cabin, enhancing passenger comfort during travel.
Existing Government Helicopter Already in Use
The Telangana government currently uses an Agusta-169 helicopter with a seating capacity of eight. Officials reportedly use the aircraft frequently for official travel across the state and beyond.
With the Airbus H-160 proposal now under review, questions remain about the future role of the existing helicopter. It is not yet clear whether the current aircraft would continue operating alongside the new helicopter or if usage patterns would be revised.
Cost Implications Under Examination
One of the key factors expected to be examined by the committee is the financial impact of the proposal. At present, the government reportedly spends up to Rs 2 crore per month on the helicopter currently in service.
If the Airbus H-160 rental plan moves forward, monthly rental expenses could rise to around Rs 5 crore. The significant increase in operational costs is likely to be a major consideration during the review process.
The Airbus H-160 helicopter proposal remains under assessment, and no final approval has been announced. Officials are expected to evaluate technical capabilities, operational needs and expenditure before taking a decision on the helicopter rental plan.
