Telangana Government issues clarification on MMTS free travel proposal status

Proposal under examination, no final decision yet

The Telangana Government has issued an official clarification regarding the proposal to provide free travel for passengers in MMTS trains. The government stated that the proposal is currently under examination in coordination with the South Central Railway.

Authorities confirmed that no final decision has been taken so far. The proposal remains at a discussion stage and is subject to further administrative and procedural approvals.

Social media misinformation flagged

The clarification comes amid the circulation of misleading information on social media platforms. The government noted that certain accounts have been spreading incorrect claims about the implementation of free travel in MMTS services.

Officials have urged the public not to rely on such unverified content. They emphasised that only official communication from the Telangana Government should be considered accurate.

Proposal formally submitted on April 7

The proposal has already been formally submitted to the South Central Railway. It was sent on April 7, 2026, through a communication bearing letter number MA&UD/SplCS/Pesh/21.

The submission was made by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Area (HMA) and the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department on behalf of the Telangana Government.

This step marks the beginning of the formal process required for considering such a policy-level change involving railway services.

South Central Railway seeks detailed agreement

In response to the proposal, the South Central Railway has asked for a detailed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The railway authorities indicated that the proposal can be processed further only after submission of terms and conditions.

Officials also noted that MMTS services are currently being operated based on passenger demand and other operational considerations. Any change to the fare structure or service model would require careful evaluation.

Railway Board approval required for implementation

The South Central Railway has clarified that the proposal must be forwarded to the Railway Board for final approval. This step is mandatory before any implementation can take place.

The process involves incorporating all relevant aspects into a comprehensive proposal. Only after review and approval by the Railway Board can a final decision be issued.

Until then, the proposal will remain under consideration without any immediate changes to existing services.

Key operational decisions rest with the Railways

The government also highlighted that certain operational aspects fall solely under the jurisdiction of the railway authorities. These include decisions on the number of trains to be operated and their schedules.

Additionally, facilities at MMTS stations are governed by Railway Board norms. Any changes or enhancements must align with these established guidelines.

This division of responsibilities means that multiple levels of approval are required before any new initiative can be introduced.

Public advised to rely on official communication

In its statement, the Telangana Government reiterated that the matter is still under review. It advised the public to avoid believing or sharing unverified information circulating online.

Citizens have been asked to depend only on official announcements for updates regarding the proposal. Further developments will be communicated after completion of the necessary procedures.
