Tamil Nadu Police Arrest Woman, Brother in Alleged Attempt to Poison Husband

A woman and her younger brother have been arrested in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district for allegedly attempting to murder her husband by pouring a poisonous substance into his ear while he was asleep. Police said the alleged attack was linked to financial distress arising from family debt, and the investigation has also uncovered an earlier suspected attempt to poison the victim.

The incident occurred in Puludikudi village in Thiruvidaimarudur taluk of Thanjavur district. According to police, Ravichandran, 54, a daily wage labourer, and his wife, Umarani, 48, have been married for 27 years. Their son works abroad, while their daughter is married.

Investigators said the family had recently constructed a new house, for which Ravichandran borrowed around Rs. 10 lakh from various sources. As repayment became increasingly difficult, frequent disputes reportedly arose between the couple over the financial burden.

Police alleged that Umarani conspired with her brother, Gnanasekaran, 35, believing that Ravichandran's death would relieve the family of its debt obligations. Based on the preliminary investigation, the two allegedly planned the attack together.

According to police, the incident took place around midnight on Tuesday when Ravichandran was asleep at home. Investigators allege that the accused poured a poisonous substance into his ear in an attempt to kill him.

Ravichandran reportedly woke up after experiencing severe discomfort and managed to leave the house. With the assistance of local residents, he was taken to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Earlier Poisoning Attempt Under Investigation

Following a complaint filed by the victim, Thiruvidaimarudur police registered a case and arrested Umarani and Gnanasekaran.

During the preliminary investigation, police said they discovered evidence suggesting that an earlier attempt had allegedly been made to poison Ravichandran about three months ago by mixing poison into his tea. Investigators stated that after that incident, Ravichandran had become cautious and had reportedly stopped consuming food or drinks served to him at home.

Police believe that the latest alleged method of attack may have been chosen after the previous attempt failed. Authorities have said the findings are part of the ongoing investigation and remain subject to further examination.

Forensic Analysis Awaited

Ravichandran's condition is reported to be stable, and he continues to receive medical treatment under the supervision of doctors.

After their arrest, Umarani and Gnanasekaran were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody at Thanjavur prison.

Police are awaiting a forensic examination to determine the nature of the poisonous substance allegedly used in the incident and to assess its potential effects. Officials said the investigation is continuing from all relevant angles, and further findings will depend on the forensic report and additional evidence collected during the probe.

The case remains under investigation.
