The Election Commission of India has reported a record voter turnout in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, with polling reaching 84.69 per cent by 8 p.m. on April 23. This marks the highest participation in the State’s electoral history.
Polling was conducted across all 234 Assembly constituencies, with voters turning out in large numbers from early morning. The voting process began at 7 a.m. and continued through the day, witnessing steady participation.
Over 4.85 Crore Voters Participate
According to provisional data, more than 4.85 crore voters exercised their franchise in the election. The figures reflect a significant increase in voter engagement compared to previous Assembly polls in the State.
Officials monitored polling across constituencies to ensure smooth conduct. The high turnout was recorded consistently across regions, contributing to the overall percentage.
Chief Election Commissioner Acknowledges Voters
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar described the turnout as the highest recorded in both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. He acknowledged the participation of voters in both States.
“The ECI salutes each voter of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,” he said, highlighting the scale of public involvement in the electoral process.
Polling Conducted Across 234 Constituencies
The election was held to constitute the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Voting took place simultaneously across all constituencies under the supervision of election authorities.
Arrangements were made to facilitate voters throughout the day, ensuring access and orderly polling procedures. The process continued until evening, with turnout figures updated periodically.
