Tamil Nadu Government Raises Legal Drinking Age to 21, Issues New ID Verification Rules
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major change in its liquor policy by increasing the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 years. The latest update comes days after the state ordered the closure of hundreds of liquor outlets located near temples, schools and bus stands.
Under the new rules, liquor sales will now be restricted to individuals aged 21 years and above. The government has also made identity verification mandatory at liquor shops, bars and pubs across the state.
Tamil Nadu Liquor Policy Revised With New Age Limit
As part of the revised Tamil Nadu liquor policy, authorities have directed liquor vendors to check valid identity documents before selling alcohol. Aadhaar card, voter ID card and driving licence will be accepted for age verification.
Officials said customers suspected to be below the legal age will have to produce valid proof before purchasing liquor. The decision is aimed at tightening enforcement around alcohol sales and preventing underage drinking.
The state government has also instructed all liquor shops, bars and pubs to display mandatory notice boards stating that alcohol will not be sold to persons below 21 years of age.

The latest government order applies to TASMAC liquor outlets as well as privately operated bars and pubs in Tamil Nadu. State-run liquor shops will be required to strictly follow the new verification process during alcohol sales.

The move follows another recent action by the Tamil Nadu administration to shut down 717 liquor shops operating near religious places, educational institutions and public transport points.
