A private schools bribery case has triggered a major controversy in Tamil Nadu after allegations surfaced that more than ₹100 crore was collected from school managements on the promise of securing government approvals. Acting on a formal complaint, the Chennai Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested the president of a private schools association.
The arrest has drawn attention to alleged irregularities in the process of obtaining permissions for private educational institutions.
Private Schools Bribery Case: What the Police Investigation Found
According to police, B.T. Arasakumar, president of a private schools association in Tamil Nadu, was arrested on Saturday following a complaint filed by the association's secretary, Ilangovan. The complaint alleged that Arasakumar collected more than ₹100 crore from private school managements by assuring them that he could obtain mandatory government approvals.
The alleged collections were reportedly carried out from an office operating in Chennai's T. Nagar area. Following preliminary verification, the Central Crime Branch registered a case and launched a police investigation into the matter.
Government Approvals Allegedly Promised to School Managements
As per the complaint, Arasakumar claimed he had political and administrative influence that would help schools secure various statutory permissions. These allegedly included school recognition, upgradation approvals, and building-related clearances from CMDA and DTCP.
Based on these assurances, hundreds of private school managements across Tamil Nadu are said to have paid substantial amounts, expecting their applications to be processed without difficulty.
Police Register Case After Schools Allege Fraud
The complainant alleged that despite collecting over ₹100 crore, the promised approvals were never obtained. School managements also claimed that the money was not returned even after the agreed period had expired.
After gathering preliminary evidence, the Chennai Central Crime Branch arrested the accused as part of its ongoing investigation. Officials are examining the financial transactions and other records connected to the case.
Arrest Sparks Concern in Tamil Nadu Education Sector
The arrest of the head of a prominent private schools association has created concern within the state's education sector. Allegations involving large-scale payments for school permissions have also raised questions about the approval process followed by educational institutions.
The private schools bribery case remains under police investigation, and further action is expected based on the evidence collected and the official statement issued by investigators.
