Suryapet Collector Responds After Woman Attempts Suicide at Public Meeting

Incident during the Praja Palana programme

A woman attempted suicide during the Praja Palana Pragati Plan meeting held at Munagala mandal centre in Suryapet district. The programme was attended by District Collector Tejas Nandalal Power, District SP Narasimha, and other mandal-level officials.

The incident occurred while the meeting was in progress, in the presence of the Collector and senior officials, causing disruption and immediate concern among those present.

Dispute over Indiramma housing allotment

Officials had identified Tadwai village in the mandal as a pilot project area under the Indiramma housing scheme. The woman, identified as Sunitha from Tadwai village, alleged that a house sanctioned in her name was allotted to another individual.

Distressed over the alleged denial, she consumed pesticide in front of the officials as an act of protest.

Immediate medical response

Following the incident, officials and attendees reacted quickly. The woman was immediately shifted to the Government Hospital in Kodad for treatment after she consumed pesticide.

Her condition at the time of admission was not detailed, but prompt medical attention was arranged to stabilise her.

Allegations of political interference

The woman also expressed anguish that welfare benefits were not reaching eligible beneficiaries due to political backing by Congress leaders. She alleged that such interference was preventing rightful allocation under government schemes.

The incident has raised concerns over the implementation process of welfare programmes and transparency in beneficiary selection at the local level.

Administrative presence and programme context

The Praja Palana programme is aimed at reviewing progress and addressing public grievances directly at the grassroots level. Senior district officials, including the Collector and SP, were present to monitor implementation and interact with residents.

The attempted suicide in such a setting has drawn attention to gaps in grievance redressal and the need for closer scrutiny of scheme allotments.
