Telangana Government Appoints Sumathi IPS as First Woman Commissioner

In a significant latest update for Telangana policing, the state government has appointed Sumathi IPS as the Malkajgiri Police Commissioner, marking a historic first woman commissioner in the Hyderabad police system. The development is being seen as a milestone in the evolving structure of law enforcement leadership.

According to official statement details, Sumathi, a 2006-batch IPS officer, assumed charge on April 24, 2026, as part of a larger reshuffle of IPS officers across the state. She succeeds Avinash Mohanty and becomes the first woman to hold this position in the region’s policing history.

First woman commissioner in Hyderabad policing system

The appointment of Sumathi IPS is being viewed as a key moment in the Hyderabad policing system, which has a long institutional history. Her elevation signals increasing representation of women in senior law enforcement roles.

She began her career as a Group-1 DSP in 2001 and later rose through the ranks after joining the Indian Police Service. Over the years, she has held multiple critical assignments across intelligence and law enforcement wings.

Key role in intelligence and Maoist negotiations

Before taking charge in Malkajgiri, Sumathi served as Inspector General in the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB). During her tenure, she played a significant role in handling Maoist-affected regions through dialogue-based approaches.

As per available incident details, her efforts contributed to the surrender of 591 Maoists over a two-year period. She was also involved in negotiations leading to the surrender of senior Maoist leader Tippiri Tirupati, also known as Devuji, in 2026.

Officials familiar with the development stated that her approach focused on building trust and reducing conflict, which became a key feature of her policing style.

Focus on technology-driven policing and crowd management

Sumathi IPS has also been associated with the use of technology in policing. During the Medaram Jatara, she oversaw the use of AI-based drone systems, known as TgQuest, to manage large crowds efficiently.

This initiative was seen as part of broader efforts to modernise policing practices and improve surveillance and response systems during major public gatherings.

Emphasis on women safety and policing reforms

In her earlier role as Deputy Inspector General in the CID women protection wing, she worked on strengthening the She Teams initiative. The programme focuses on ensuring women’s safety and addressing harassment-related complaints.

Officials noted that her administrative approach has consistently included prioritising public safety and community engagement. Her new role is expected to continue this focus, particularly in urban policing challenges.

Awards and recognition in service

Sumathi IPS has received recognition for her service, including the Vishishta Mahila Puraskar in 2022. She has also been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on the occasion of Republic Day.

Her appointment as Malkajgiri Commissioner comes at a time when the Telangana Police is undergoing structural changes aimed at improving efficiency and accountability.

The latest update indicates that the police investigation mechanisms and administrative systems under her leadership may see further strengthening. Officials are expected to outline her priorities in the coming days as she settles into the new role.
