Priyanka Gandhi Commends CM Revanth Reddy Over Delimitation Stand

Meeting in Delhi focuses on delimitation concerns

Congress national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday met Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in Delhi and appreciated his efforts on the issue of constituency delimitation. The interaction centred on the concerns raised over the Centre’s proposed approach to delimitation.

Priyanka Gandhi commended the Chief Minister for placing before the public what she described as shortcomings in the BJP’s policy on constituency reorganisation. She also acknowledged his role in suggesting alternative measures and working towards unity among southern states on the issue.

Opposition unity and political coordination

During the meeting, Revanth Reddy expressed gratitude to Priyanka Gandhi for supporting opposition unity. He said her backing had strengthened efforts to bring together opposition parties in response to the Centre’s proposed constitutional amendment related to delimitation.

The Chief Minister also conveyed appreciation on behalf of the people of Telangana for her support to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge in coordinating a broader political response. The discussion highlighted the need for collective action to address concerns raised by several states.

Concerns over constitutional amendment proposal

Priyanka Gandhi reiterated that the proposed constitutional amendment by the Centre could adversely affect southern, northeastern, and smaller states. She noted that the move, as perceived by the opposition, could weaken representation and disrupt the existing balance among states.

She further pointed out that despite the women’s reservation bill already receiving unanimous approval, a special session was convened under the banner of women’s empowerment. According to her, this session was used to push forward what she termed an unnecessary delimitation agenda.

Background to the delimitation debate

The issue of delimitation has been a point of contention, particularly among states that fear a reduction in their political representation. Leaders from southern states have consistently raised concerns over population-based seat redistribution and its long-term implications.

The meeting in Delhi reflects ongoing consultations within the Congress party as well as broader opposition efforts to respond to the Centre’s proposals. The discussions are expected to continue in the coming weeks as political parties assess their next steps.
