Philippines Authorities Issue Tsunami Warning After Mindanao Earthquake
A powerful Philippines earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings and begin precautionary evacuations in vulnerable coastal areas. The latest update from monitoring agencies triggered alerts across parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific region as officials assessed the potential impact of tsunami waves.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometres. The agency revised the quake's magnitude multiple times before confirming it at 7.8.
Philippines Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alerts Across Region
The strong offshore earthquake led to tsunami warnings from Philippine authorities, Indonesia's geophysics agency and international monitoring centres. Residents living in low-lying coastal communities were advised to move to higher ground as a precaution.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned that tsunami waves exceeding one metre above normal tide levels could affect several coastal areas. The agency said wave activity could continue for several hours following the seismic event.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated that some Philippine coastlines could experience waves reaching up to three metres. Smaller tsunami waves of up to one metre were projected for parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia Included in Monitoring Alerts
Authorities expanded monitoring efforts across neighbouring regions after the earthquake. Tsunami alerts were issued in Malaysia, while Indonesia warned coastal communities in its northeastern areas to remain cautious.
International agencies also indicated that smaller waves could be observed in Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea and several Pacific island territories. Emergency monitoring continued as officials tracked sea-level changes and aftershock activity.
As of the latest official statement, no tsunami threat had been reported for Thailand or San Francisco. Monitoring agencies continued to assess ocean conditions following the earthquake.
Coastal Evacuations Underway After Earthquake
Local authorities in southern Philippines initiated evacuations in several coastal villages soon after the tsunami warning was issued. Residents were directed away from shorelines and instructed to remain in safer inland locations until further advisories.
PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol urged people in affected areas to move to higher ground or travel further inland as a precautionary measure.
Arlene Hollero, disaster chief of Maasim town in Sarangani province, confirmed that evacuation operations were underway in vulnerable coastal communities.
Authorities Continue Assessment and Aftershock Monitoring
There were no immediate reports of fatalities following the Philippines earthquake. However, officials reported disruptions to power and communication services in areas near the epicentre.
Authorities said damage assessments and monitoring operations were continuing as aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake. Emergency agencies remain on alert while evaluating incident details and potential coastal impacts linked to the tsunami warning.
