NCDC Flags Heat Risk, Advises Seasonal Vegetable Intake for Hydration

Rising Temperatures Trigger Health Concerns

Amid increasing temperatures across the country, concerns over dehydration and heat-related illnesses are growing. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has indicated that rising heat conditions are impacting public health.

In 2025, a total of 7,192 heat stroke cases were recorded, including 14 deaths. The data reflects the severity of heat exposure and the need for preventive measures during the summer season.

Advisory on Dietary Habits During Summer

Health experts are advising people to focus on dietary choices that help maintain hydration and regulate body temperature. Seasonal vegetables with high water content are being recommended as part of daily meals.

Vegetables such as bottle gourd, bitter gourd, and tinda are widely consumed and are considered beneficial during summer. These vegetables contain around 90 to 92 percent water, which supports natural hydration.

Nutritional Value and Health Benefits

These vegetables are low in calories and easy to digest, making them suitable for regular consumption. They also contribute to maintaining metabolic balance in the body.

They are known to contain Vitamin C, fibre, potassium, antioxidants, and B vitamins. These nutrients help improve digestion, support immunity, and maintain energy levels.

Bottle gourd, commonly available during summer, contains approximately 90 to 96 percent water. It aids digestion, reduces acidity, and provides a feeling of fullness due to its fibre content, which also supports weight management.

Role in Managing Health Conditions

Bitter gourd, despite its taste, contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic acids. These are associated with managing long-term conditions such as diabetes and other health issues.

It also helps in reducing inflammation within the body. Tinda, another seasonal vegetable, contains polyphenols, antioxidants, Vitamin C, and magnesium, contributing to overall health.

These vegetables are low in calories and support weight control while helping the body stay cool during extreme temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings indicating a possible rise in temperatures during the current summer. In such conditions, maintaining hydration becomes essential.

Experts continue to emphasise the inclusion of water-rich foods in daily diets to prevent dehydration and manage heat-related health risks effectively.
