Historic Verdict in Sathankulam Custodial Death Case

A court in Tamil Nadu has delivered a significant judgment in the custodial death case involving a father and son in Thoothukudi district. The First Additional Sessions Court in Madurai district has sentenced nine police personnel to death in connection with the incident.

The case pertains to the deaths of Jayaraj and Bennix in Sathankulam during the COVID-19 period. The two were taken into custody after allegedly keeping their mobile shop open.

Police Personnel Held Guilty of Custodial Torture

According to the case details, the father and son were subjected to severe torture while in police custody, leading to their deaths. The incident had drawn widespread attention at the time due to the nature of the allegations.

The court, after examining the evidence, found all nine accused police personnel guilty. The accused were identified in the case as A1 to A9.

Death Sentences and Financial Penalties Imposed

In its ruling, the court awarded death sentences to all nine accused. The judgment also included financial penalties on certain individuals.

A fine of Rs. 24 lakh was imposed on A1, while A2 was directed to pay Rs. 16.30 lakh. The total fine amount, calculated at Rs. 1.40 crore, is to be paid as compensation to the mother of the deceased Bennix.

Compensation and Asset Seizure Provision

The court further directed that the compensation amount must be paid to the victim’s family. In case the convicted individuals fail to pay, their properties are to be seized and auctioned.

The proceeds from such auctions are to be transferred to the affected family as compensation. The order specifies clear enforcement measures to ensure compliance with the compensation directive.
