BJP Accepts K Annamalai Resignation After Leadership Meetings
The K Annamalai resignation has emerged as a significant development for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with party leader Nitin Nabin accepting the former Tamil Nadu BJP chief's decision to quit the party. The latest update comes after a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi and despite efforts by the BJP leadership to persuade him to reconsider.
Annamalai's exit is being viewed as an important political setback for the BJP's expansion plans in Tamil Nadu, where he had become one of the party's most recognisable faces in recent years.

K Annamalai Resignation Follows Discussions With BJP Leadership
According to party sources, Annamalai met BJP leader Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh in New Delhi on Tuesday.
During these meetings, he reportedly briefed senior leaders on the political situation in Tamil Nadu and explained the reasons behind his decision to step away from the party. Sources indicated that Annamalai verbally communicated his intention to resign during the discussions.
Despite continued efforts from the BJP leadership to convince him to stay, the former Tamil Nadu unit president remained firm on his decision.
BJP Faces Challenge After Annamalai Exit
The departure of Annamalai is expected to have political implications for the BJP in Tamil Nadu. The former IPS officer played a prominent role in strengthening the party's organisational presence and increasing its visibility across the state.
His aggressive campaigning, frequent attacks on political opponents and extensive grassroots outreach helped energise party workers and position the BJP as a more assertive political force.
Many within the party viewed his leadership as instrumental in broadening the BJP's appeal among voters in Tamil Nadu.
Electoral Performance Under Annamalai
One of the key achievements during Annamalai's tenure was the BJP's growth in vote share. The party improved its vote share in Tamil Nadu from 3.6 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to 11.2 per cent in the 2024 parliamentary polls, marking its strongest performance in the state.
However, despite the increase in support, the BJP failed to win a Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai himself lost the closely watched Coimbatore contest.
The electoral results highlighted both the party's expanding reach and the challenges it continued to face in converting vote share into seats.
Leadership Change and Political Context
In April 2025, Annamalai was replaced as Tamil Nadu BJP president by Nainar Nagendran. The leadership change was widely seen as part of an effort to improve relations between the BJP and AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami.
Subsequently, the BJP contested the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as a junior partner in the AIADMK-led alliance. While the party managed to secure a seat, its vote share dropped sharply from more than 11 per cent in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to below 3 per cent in the Assembly polls.
The K Annamalai resignation now adds another major development to the BJP's evolving political strategy in Tamil Nadu. With the party assessing its next steps, attention is likely to remain on how the leadership responds to the latest update and the broader political challenges in the state.
