Authorities Register Case After Complaint Flags Illegal Dog Blood Trade
Sheikhpet hospital under scrutiny after complaint by Maneka Gandhi
A private veterinary hospital in Sheikhpet has come under investigation following allegations of illegal blood trade involving dogs. The issue surfaced after a complaint was filed by Maneka Gandhi, bringing the hospital’s practices into focus.
The complaint points to serious irregularities in how animals were handled and how medical procedures were carried out within the facility.
Stray dogs allegedly used for blood extraction
According to the allegations, hospital operators were bringing stray dogs into the facility under the pretext of treatment and care. These animals were reportedly confined in cages and kept within the premises.
The dogs were then subjected to forced blood extraction. The collected blood was stored and later used for transfusion purposes.

Pet owners reportedly misled with test reports
The complaint further states that pet dogs brought to the hospital for treatment were subjected to blood tests regardless of actual medical need. Reports indicating anaemia were allegedly generated to create concern among pet owners.
Based on these reports, owners were advised immediate blood transfusion. Blood sourced from stray dogs was then administered to the pets as part of the treatment.
High-priced blood packets are sold
The hospital is accused of selling each packet of dog blood at prices ranging from Rs 18,000 to Rs 25,000. These transactions were reportedly carried out as part of routine treatment procedures suggested to pet owners.
The pricing and frequency of such procedures have raised questions about the necessity and ethical standards followed by the hospital.
Health impact on stray and pet dogs
As per the complaint, several stray dogs that were used for blood extraction developed anaemia and died. At the same time, some pet dogs that received transfusions reportedly fell ill after the procedure.
These developments have triggered concern over both animal welfare and medical malpractice within the facility.
Context of animal welfare oversight
The case highlights ongoing concerns around the regulation of private veterinary establishments and the handling of stray animals. Animal welfare activists have repeatedly flagged gaps in monitoring mechanisms.
Authorities are expected to examine the allegations in detail and take action based on the findings of the investigation.
