Hyderabad: Miyapur Police Register Case After Mother Dies by Suicide, Infant Critical

A 37-year-old woman jumped from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Hyderabad's Miyapur area on Friday, taking her six-month-old daughter with her. The mother died on the spot. The infant was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The incident took place in Mayuri Nagar, under the limits of Miyapur Police Station.

What Happened in Miyapur

The deceased has been identified as Eesha Sahu, 37, a resident of an apartment complex in Mayuri Nagar. As per police and locals, she jumped from the sixth floor while holding her infant daughter close to her chest.

Residents who witnessed the fall immediately alerted emergency services and rushed the baby to a corporate hospital in the vicinity. The woman was declared dead at the scene.

Postpartum Depression Suspected as Trigger

Preliminary information gathered by police suggests Eesha had been suffering from postpartum depression — a condition that set in after the birth of her second child, this six-month-old daughter.

The matter came to light that she had been going through severe mental distress for several weeks. Those close to her reportedly knew she was struggling, though the full extent of her condition remains under investigation.

Postpartum depression affects a significant number of new mothers and, when left unaddressed, can escalate into crisis. It is not a weakness — it is a medical condition that requires timely intervention.

Police Response and Case Registered

Miyapur police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The body was taken into custody and sent to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examination, as per standard procedure.

A case has been registered, and a full investigation is now underway. Officers are speaking to family members and neighbours to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

Infant's Condition Remains Critical

The six-month-old girl sustained serious injuries in the fall and is currently admitted to a private hospital. Her condition is described as critical. Hospital authorities have not issued a formal statement as of this report.

Local residents expressed shock over the incident. Several said they had seen the family around the building but were unaware of any visible signs of distress.

Background

Hyderabad has seen a rise in reported cases linked to postpartum mental health in recent years, though awareness and access to support systems remain uneven across the city. Medical professionals have repeatedly flagged the need for structured screening of new mothers during and after pregnancy.

Miyapur Police Station is continuing its investigation. Further details are expected once the post-mortem report is submitted and family statements are recorded.
