Telangana Government Plans Free MMTS Travel Scheme from June 2

State prepares rollout to boost public transport usage

The Telangana government is planning to introduce free travel in MMTS trains for all passengers in Hyderabad. The proposal is aimed at encouraging public transport usage and addressing growing traffic congestion and pollution in the city.

The scheme is expected to be implemented from June 2, marking Telangana Formation Day. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has approved the proposal, and administrative preparations are currently underway.

Free travel for all categories of passengers

As per the plan, the benefit will be extended to all passengers without any distinction between men and women. The move is being positioned as a broader public transport initiative rather than a targeted welfare scheme.

Officials believe that making MMTS travel free will improve accessibility and draw more commuters towards rail-based transport within the city.

Pilot implementation for one year

The government intends to implement the scheme on a pilot basis for one year initially. During this period, its impact on commuter patterns and system efficiency will be assessed before taking a long-term decision.

To support the initiative, the state government is prepared to bear an annual expenditure of Rs.10 crore.

Low ridership and service gaps cited

At present, only around 80 to 88 MMTS trains are operating in Hyderabad, with an estimated daily ridership of about 40,000 passengers. Limited trips and lack of punctuality have affected the system’s popularity among commuters.

The government expects that free travel will significantly increase passenger numbers and improve utilisation of the MMTS network.

Hyderabad has been witnessing increasing traffic congestion and rising pollution levels. Authorities are focusing on strengthening public transport systems to ease pressure on roads.

The proposed MMTS free travel scheme is part of this broader approach to promote sustainable and efficient urban mobility.
