Police Face Protest as Private Drivers Stage Sit-In at Mancherial Depot

Tension prevailed at the RTC depot in Mancherial after private drivers staged a protest alleging assault by ACP Prakash. The drivers gathered in front of the depot and held a sit-in, raising concerns over their safety amid the ongoing RTC strike.

The protest comes at a time when transport services are being managed with alternative arrangements due to the strike by RTC workers. The situation at the depot turned tense as drivers demanded accountability from officials.

Allegations of Assault by ACP Prakash

Private drivers accused ACP Prakash of physically assaulting one of their colleagues. According to the drivers, the incident occurred when a driver questioned authorities about safety while operating buses during the strike period.

The drivers alleged that ACP Prakash hit the driver on the chest and used abusive language. The allegations triggered anger among the drivers, leading to the protest at the depot premises.

Safety Concerns Amid Strike Operations

The protesting drivers said they are being asked to operate buses during the RTC strike despite the risk of confrontation with striking RTC employees. They expressed concern that RTC drivers may obstruct bus operations, leading to possible clashes.

The drivers questioned who would be responsible for their safety if such incidents occurred. The lack of clarity on security arrangements has become a key issue raised during the protest.

RTC Strike and Ongoing Demands

The protest also reflects the broader unrest linked to the ongoing RTC strike. Workers and unions have been pressing multiple demands, including the merger of RTC with the government and recognition of workers as government employees.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) has also demanded removal of restrictions on trade unions and the conduct of recognition union elections. Other demands include immediate payment of Rs. 400 crore dues under the free bus scheme.

Demands on Employment and Operations

Among the demands raised are the merger of contract and private drivers into the RTC system and withdrawal of privatisation measures. The unions have also called for the government to directly procure electric buses and assign them to the RTC.

There are also demands to regularise contract and outsourcing posts without delay. These issues have been central to the ongoing agitation by worker groups.

RTC Management Response

Amid the strike, RTC officials have stated that services are being maintained through outsourcing and other workforce arrangements to avoid inconvenience to passengers.

The RTC Depot Manager at Bhadrachalam said that alternative staff are being used to ensure continuity of services. However, the situation at Mancherial indicates operational challenges on the ground.

Situation Remains Tense at Depot

The protest at the Mancherial depot led to a tense atmosphere in the area. The drivers continued their sit-in, demanding safety assurances and action on their allegations.

Authorities are expected to review the situation and address the concerns raised by the drivers to prevent escalation.
