Central Government Employee Arrested With Over 2 Kg of Cannabis in Mahabubabad

A central government employee has been arrested for allegedly transporting more than two kilograms of cannabis in Telangana's Mahabubabad district, prompting concern in the agency region over the spread of illegal narcotics. Police said the accused was caught during a routine vehicle inspection, and a case has been registered as the investigation continues into the suspected supply network.

According to police, the accused has been identified as 23-year-old Maloth Kalyan, a resident of Puttalabhoopathi Thanda in Tirumalagandi village of Gangaram mandal, Mahabubabad district. Officials said he is employed in a central government job.

The arrest was made near an Indian Oil petrol station in Ashok Nagar village of Khanapuram mandal during a vehicle checking drive conducted by police. Officers reportedly became suspicious of the individual during the inspection and carried out a search.

During the search, police recovered 2.038 kilograms of dried cannabis allegedly in the possession of the accused. The seized contraband has an estimated value of around Rs. 1,01,900, according to officials.

Following the seizure, police arrested Kalyan and produced him before a court. The magistrate remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days, police said.

Investigation into the Supply Network

Police have registered a case and said the investigation is focused on identifying others who may be involved in the alleged cannabis supply chain. Authorities are examining the source of the seized narcotics and whether additional individuals were connected to its transportation and distribution.

No further details regarding the wider network or possible arrests have been released at this stage.

Local Concern Over Drug Activity

The incident has drawn attention in the Mahabubabad agency area, where residents expressed concern over the reported spread of narcotics into tribal and rural communities. Locals said the arrest of an educated young man employed in a central government position has heightened worries about the reach of illegal drug trafficking.

Residents have urged law enforcement agencies to take strict action against those involved in the illegal narcotics trade and to intensify efforts to prevent drugs from reaching young people.

Cannabis trafficking remains a focus for police across several parts of Telangana, with regular vehicle inspections and enforcement operations aimed at disrupting the movement of illegal drugs. Authorities have reiterated that investigations will continue to identify all those connected to the case.
