Bhadrachalam Area Hospital Performs Complex Burn Surgery on Electrocution Victim

A multidisciplinary medical team at Bhadrachalam Area Hospital has successfully performed a complex reconstructive surgery on a 28-year-old man who suffered extensive burn injuries after an electric shock, providing critical treatment after his family exhausted their financial resources on prolonged medical care.

The patient, Madapa Bhaskar, a resident of Sudibaka village in Venkatapuram mandal of the Bhadrachalam Assembly constituency, sustained severe burns over nearly 60% of his body in an electrical accident. According to his family, he was initially treated at multiple hospitals in Hyderabad, where medical expenses reached between Rs.20 lakh and Rs.30 lakh.

The family, which described itself as economically disadvantaged, said it was forced to sell agricultural land to fund the treatment. After they were no longer able to continue private medical care, they approached Bhadrachalam MLA and general surgeon Dr. Tellam Venkata Rao for assistance.

Patient shifted to government hospital

After learning about the family's circumstances, Dr. Tellam Venkata Rao arranged for the patient to be admitted to Bhadrachalam Area Hospital, which functions under the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad. Hospital authorities initiated further treatment and planned a surgical procedure required for the patient's recovery.

According to the hospital, the facility did not have a general surgeon available at the time. Dr. Tellam Venkata Rao, who is also an MS-qualified general surgeon, personally participated in the operation, which lasted approximately four to five hours.

The surgery was successfully completed with the support of a multidisciplinary medical team that included orthopedic surgeon Dr. B. Devaraj, Dr. Tati Mallesh, Dr. Nikita and Dr. Kaundinya, along with the anaesthesia team, nursing staff and operation theatre personnel.

Hospital superintendent commends medical team

Bhadrachalam Area Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Y. Rajasekhar Reddy praised the successful outcome of the complex procedure and acknowledged the efforts of everyone involved.

He said it was commendable that Dr. Tellam Venkata Rao personally performed surgery on such a challenging case in a government hospital. He also appreciated the contributions of the surgeons, nursing staff, anaesthesia team and operation theatre personnel who worked together during the lengthy procedure.

Patient recovering under medical supervision

Hospital officials said the patient is recovering steadily and continues to receive treatment under close medical supervision.

The patient's parents expressed gratitude to the MLA and the hospital staff for providing continued care after they were unable to afford further treatment.

"We had to sell our property to continue medical treatment. When we had no option left, Dr. Tellam Venkata Rao, the doctors and the nursing staff at Bhadrachalam Area Hospital gave our son a new lease of life. We will remain grateful to them," the family said.

Public response

Residents of the region have welcomed the successful surgery, saying the case demonstrates that government hospitals are capable of delivering advanced medical treatment for complex conditions when supported by experienced medical professionals and coordinated healthcare teams.

The successful procedure also highlights the role of multidisciplinary care in managing severe burn injuries, which often require prolonged treatment, specialised surgical intervention and continuous rehabilitation to improve patient outcomes.
