Woman Killed in Bengaluru After Family Refuses Marriage to Man with Criminal Record

A young woman was stabbed to death in Bengaluru's Mahālakshmi Layout after her family declined a marriage proposal from a man they described as having a criminal background, police said. The suspect, identified as Rajiv, has been arrested in connection with the killing.

The victim, Anjali, had been in a relationship with Rajiv for some time without her family's knowledge. When the couple's relationship eventually came to light, Anjali's family rejected Rajiv's proposal for marriage, citing his criminal history as the reason for their refusal.

Invitation Turned Fatal

Rather than accepting the family's decision, Rajiv is alleged to have harboured resentment over the rejection. According to police, he invited Anjali to dinner, where an altercation broke out. Rajiv then allegedly attacked her with a knife, inflicting a fatal wound to her throat.

Residents in the area rushed Anjali to a nearby hospital, but she died while receiving treatment. Police subsequently arrested Rajiv and have launched a formal investigation into the incident.

Anjali's family, who were unaware of the relationship until recently, are said to be devastated by her death.

A Pattern of Concern

The incident has renewed calls for greater awareness among parents about the risks young women can face in relationships that develop out of their families' sight — particularly during college years, when many young people live and socialise away from home for the first time.

Crimes involving intimate partner violence following a rejection of marriage proposals have been documented across India in recent years, prompting advocacy groups and law enforcement agencies to call for stronger legal deterrents and better support systems for women who face threats from former or current partners.

Police have filed charges against the accused and the case remains under investigation.
