Andhra Pradesh Government Faces Fresh Questions Over Amaravati Building Costs
The Andhra Pradesh government is facing renewed criticism over the Amaravati government buildings project after fresh tenders were reportedly issued for key structures including the Assembly, High Court, and Secretariat. The latest update has triggered political reactions over the rising project cost and the selection of contractors for the proposed permanent structures.
Former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that despite nearly Rs. 1,200 crore already being spent on the Assembly, High Court, and Secretariat infrastructure, the government has moved ahead with plans for new construction under the “permanent buildings” initiative.

Amaravati Building Costs Trigger Political Debate
According to the claims made by Jagan, fresh tenders have been issued for the same institutional structures, while contracts were allegedly awarded again to previously associated contractors. The remarks have intensified the political debate around Amaravati development expenditure and public infrastructure spending in Andhra Pradesh.
Jagan questioned the reported financial estimates linked to five newly planned buildings. He claimed that around Rs. 401 crore was allocated only for architectural designs and planning work. The total projected expenditure for the five structures was stated to be around Rs. 10,665 crore.
The former chief minister further alleged that the construction cost currently works out to nearly Rs. 20,427 per square foot, significantly higher than earlier estimates that were reportedly below Rs. 5,000 per square foot. He also claimed that additional spending on interiors, furniture, and related works could push the total cost beyond Rs. 30,000 per square foot.
Opposition Questions Tender Process and Spending
The remarks have added pressure on the Andhra Pradesh government as opposition leaders continue raising concerns over transparency in the tender allocation process. No official statement responding to the allegations had been issued at the time of reporting.
The issue has also revived comparisons with infrastructure projects in neighbouring states. Referring to the Telangana Secretariat project, Jagan claimed that the Secretariat complex in Telangana was constructed at a substantially lower cost of around Rs. 615 crore.
The Amaravati capital region project has remained politically sensitive since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The debate over permanent government infrastructure, capital expenditure, and administrative development continues to dominate political discourse in the state.
