Air India Introduces Basic Fare Option on Select Domestic Routes
Air India has launched a new low-cost ticket option on selected domestic routes, offering passengers a cheaper way to travel by allowing them to opt out of complimentary onboard meals. The full-service carrier said the new "Basic Fare Family" category is aimed at providing customers with greater flexibility and control over how they travel and what services they choose to pay for.
According to Air India, the Basic Fare option is currently being introduced on a pilot basis across selected domestic routes. The airline said the future expansion and continuation of the fare category will depend on customer response and demand.
Under the new fare structure, passengers travelling in Economy Class can purchase tickets at a lower base fare while receiving a standard baggage allowance. Travellers booking under the Basic Fare category are entitled to carry up to 15 kilograms of checked baggage and 7 kilograms of cabin baggage.
However, unlike Air India's regular fare categories, the Basic Fare does not include complimentary meals. Passengers will continue to receive tea, coffee and other refreshments free of charge during the flight.
Greater Choice for Travellers
Air India said the introduction of the Basic Fare is part of its effort to provide customers with more choice and flexibility when booking flights. The airline noted that some travellers, particularly those focused on ticket prices, may prefer to pay only for the services they need rather than purchasing bundled offerings.
The carrier clarified that the Basic Fare is entirely optional. Customers can continue to choose from the airline's existing fare categories, including Value, Classic and Flex fares. These options include complimentary meals and additional bundled benefits, with the level of benefits increasing according to the fare selected.
The airline stated that the new fare category is intended to serve passengers who prefer a lower upfront ticket cost while retaining the option to add services separately if required.
Meal Pre-Booking Still Available
Although complimentary meals are not included in the Basic Fare, Air India said passengers booking under this category can still purchase meals separately before their journey.
The airline allows meal pre-booking up to 24 hours before departure. Available options include vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain and diabetic meal selections, enabling travellers to choose meals based on their dietary preferences and requirements.
By introducing the Basic Fare Family option, Air India joins a broader industry trend of offering more customised travel choices while maintaining premium fare categories for passengers seeking additional services and benefits.
